Force Feature: 7 Best Star Wars Quotes
Exploring the many worlds of Star Wars, in the imagination and in real life!So in setting out to do a “best quotes” list, it’s not really a best quotes list. It’s a personality test. There are so many quotable moments in the movies that picking a few favorites reveals more about yourself than it does about the movies themselves. One thing I’m going to ask you to do is post your favorites as comments on the Facebook post for this episode, at Facebook.com/sw7x7.
And because we’ve got 7 movies – the six, plus the Clone Wars cartoon movie from 2008 – I’m going to tell you my one all-time favorite line from each of them.
1. Phantom Menace. It’s hard to pass up Nute Gunray’s “Process them” because it’s supposed to be so sinister, and yet it sounds like it could have come from the movie Office Space, so I laugh at it for the wrong reasons. But for my money, it’s Obi-Wan’s line, “Why do I sense we’ve picked up another pathetic life form?” Dryly delivered and yet dripping with sarcasm.
2. Attack of the Clones. Hands down, this one for me is Mace Windu with his lightsaber at Jango Fett’s throat, looking Count Dooku in the eyes and saying, “This party’s over.” C-3PO’s “This is such a drag” could have been an awful pun if it hadn’t been delivered with such gusto by Anthony Daniels. That’s my 2nd place quote right there.
3. Revenge of the Sith. I liked Obi-Wan’s character from the Original Trilogy, but I like him even better in the prequels. It’s like that thing about how you can’t imagine your parents ever being cool when they were younger. Well, Obi-Wan sure as heck was, and he gets my vote for his line after defeating General Grievous. Tossing aside the blaster with a “So uncivilized.” How is what he does to Anakin with a lightsaber civilized, I might add?
4. Star Wars, aka A New Hope. Han Solo has a boatload of great quotes in this one, and you know how sometimes you can’t get behind just one quote, so your vote splits across a bunch of them and then something entirely different wins? That’s what happens here. And thus, my favorite is Darth Vader’s “I find your lack of faith disturbing.” Again, the delivery is pitch-perfect. He says it so calmly and matter-of-factly, and yet, what could really “disturb” this intensely menacing Sith warrior? I imagine it was more disturbing for everyone else in the conference room.
5. The Empire Strikes Back. If you did a top 50 quotes across all the Star Wars movies, chances are at least half of the top ten would come from Empire. We use sounds clips from all six live action movies in our podcast, but I could have done six episodes worth of sound clips from Empire alone. At least I’m using my favorite in there: Princess Leia yelling, “I am not a committee!” Which also needs the lead-in of Leia saying, “The Empire is still out there,” et cetera, before getting cut off by Han snapping back with “No time to discuss this in committee!” And after Leia yells back at him, we get the topper – Threepio’s plaintive wail as he topples down a corridor.
6. Return of the Jedi. When I thought back over it, I was surprised to discover that I didn’t have a lot of favorites, so it wasn’t very hard to choose. It’s Lando by a longshot, with “Someone must have told them about my little maneuver at the Battle of Taanab.” Everything about that line is golden. Who actually told the Rebel command about it? Probably Lando himself. And such over-the-top false modesty, too, if whatever that maneuver had been was enough to skip past captain and commander to get him to general.
7. The Clone Wars. Strong male and female characters bantering – now that’s a successful formula! So Ahsoka Tano gets my vote in this one. It’s a close call with “Great! You woke the baby!” but I think I have to go with “You’ve got that ‘we’re in trouble’ look” for the way it evokes the language of the previous movies in a fresh kind of way.
Okay, so that’s my list! Now it’s your turn – comment at Facebook.com/sw7x7, or tweet ‘em to me at @SW7x7Podcast.
