“Semi-Professsional smartass. Freelance critic/columnist. Murderer of pop-culture memories.” That’s how Bobby Roberts describes himself on the Full of Sith podcast’s website. The head of “Rumor Control” on the podcast – which also stars Tha Mike Pilot, Bryan Young, Consetta Parker, and Amy Ratcliffe – Bobby has been in the podcasting world for more than a decade, but his run will soon come to an end.
At the end of the year – and after the release of The Force Awakens – Bobby will be stepping back, and enjoying the world of podcasting and Star Wars the way George Lucas gets to sit back and enjoy what gets produced. And, without having to think about a content kingdom to build around it.
Speaking of Lucas, he’s been in the media a lot recently, talking about his relationship to the franchise that he created. Thanks to a Twitter exchange between myself, Bobby, and Mike Klimo of Star Wars Ring Theory, I reached out to Bobby and asked him to discuss and review with me the history of The Force Awakens and the Sequel Trilogy, and George Lucas’ role and relationship to it all.
Our wide-ranging conversation covers:
- Lucas’ original stated intent to do nine movies
- The genesis of the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney
- The sequel trilogy treatments that were part of the deal
- The first attempt at a script with Michael Arndt
- The switch from Arndt to Abrams and Kasdan
- How Abrams and Kasdan approached and completed The Force Awakens script
- Disney’s development decisions
- Lucas’ “not my movie” comments
- The “divorce” analogy
- What Lucas thinks of The Force Awakens, now that he’s seen it
It’s our longest episode ever, and filled with laughter throughout. So settle in, and if you enjoy what you hear, please let me know with a nice rating or review on iTunes. Got comments on the show? Have your say below!
