I’ve been thrilled and honored to receive advance copies of books to review, but none so surprising as BB-8 on the Run, with words by Drew Daywalt and art by Matt Myers. A kid’s picture book? About the last thing I expected to see in my mailbox.
And yet there it was, and it was gorgeous. The paintings by Myers are absolutely gorgeous – especially when you consider how much sand had to figure into the work! And as for the story, well, for some reason this 36-hour period is becoming one of the most well-documented sections of time in Star Wars history. From the night where BB-8 is forced to leave Poe, to the next night that he spends with Rey in her AT-AT home, to the following day in Niima Outpost where they’re chased into the arms of the Falcon, And between the movie, the novelization, Forces of Destiny, and now this, we practically have a full and complete accounting of his time on Jakku.
In today’s podcast, I’m talking about the tie-ins to The Force Awakens from the picture book, and also something that didn’t jump out at me about Lor San Tekka that I hadn’t considered until I read BB-8 on the Run. No, he doesn’t appear in it, but for me his presence is more heavily felt now than it was before.
