First, there was the Original Trilogy, which included a stand-alone film and two sequels completing a larger story.
Then there was the Prequel Trilogy, which had three films designed to tell one large story over the course of many years.
Now we have what’s known as the Sequel Trilogy. And though it’s not yet complete, we’re talking about it that way, but … should we?
J.J. Abrams has said there was no plan for Episodes VIII or IX when he was doing The Force Awakens. Rian Johnson has said there was no roadmap of things to hit in The Last Jedi, nor was anything done with an eye to what should/could happen in Episode IX.
On today’s episode of the podcast, I’m looking at those facts and more, and suggesting that what we’re getting isn’t so much a “trilogy” as something else – something of which, ironically, George Lucas is a professed fan, and which helped inspire the Star Wars movies in the very beginning!
