You remember what Yoda said to Luke before he died in Return of the Jedi?
When gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be.
This means that Kanan Jarrus, Jedi Knight, must die by the end of Star Wars Rebels.
Or does it?
See, that’s the conclusion we’ve all been jumping to, but it rests on a couple of rather shaky assumptions:
1. That Kanan won’t revoke the Jedi Order. Ahsoka Tano did the same thing, as you’ll recall. And that haircutting business in the mid-season trailer? Star Wars loves its samurai influences, and that could be the equivalent of Kanan cutting his top-knot and leaving the samurai/Jedi path. Especially since things are starting to progress in his romantic relationship with Hera.
2. Even if the end of Rebels flows right into the beginning of Rogue One – which, as far as we know, it does not, but even if you assumed it did – then there would be four in-universe years between the end of Rebels and the time of Yoda’s death. Plenty of time for Kanan to die some other way that doesn’t appear in Rebels.
That said, Ethan Percival from the Coruscant Post reached out to me about a segment of the livestream from Star Wars Celebration Orlando, in which it appears that Sam Witwer (voice of Palpatine and Maul in previous seasons of Rebels) reveals exactly who survives the end of Rebels. I’m going to put the link right here, but fair warning, the URL and the headline both include the potential spoiler.
I say “potential” because I feel differently about Sam’s intent in that livestream interview, but if you’re curious and not spoiler-averse, check it out and let me know what you think.
On the podcast today, I’ll explain my point of view on that, and also talk about the title of a track by Rebels music maestro Kevin Kiner that also plays into (pun intended) this whole conversation…

I think that guy with The Coruscant Post is right about Hera.
