George Lucas can claim Greedo always shot first until the cows come home. He can say “Sorry you fell in love with a movie that was 25% complete,” when he’s really not sorry about it at all. And I’m sorry, but that’s a load of hooey.
This is how bad it’s gotten to be. I deeply respect George Lucas, but this is not what the creative process looks like. Tolstoy didn’t publish multiple drafts of War and Peace. The New York Times doesn’t revise and republish its old issues.
The way it works is that you get it as far as you can take it, then you release it out into the world and let it become its own thing. You move on to your next thing. Maybe you annotate and footnote it for the anniversary edition years later, but that’s it.
Sure, I can maybe give him credit for technical things like upgrading the sound from Dolby 5.1 to 7.1 or some such nonsense. But there’s not a single image in the original versions that ever needed to be altered, and nothing was missing that begged to be created. And you’d think after twenty years had passed between the original release of Star Wars and the Special Edition release, he would have heard enough from fans to know that he didn’t have to do anything with it, that fans liked it perfectly as is.
That’s my take – what’s yours? Have your say in the comments! And in the meantime, drive yourself crazy with this.

Hey Shari! Thanks so much for tuning in, I really appreciate it! If this is your only outlet, then I better make sure it’s your best one, too. 🙂
And you know what, I bet you’re right that 2-1B had a needle. The one I had in mind is the interrogator droid from Star Wars, the one on the Death Star that goes after Princess Leia.
