So, imagine you’re sitting in the movie theater with a bunch of Star Wars fans, and you’re all amped up for your first viewing of The Force Awakens.
Do you think it’s going to be a silent movie theater?
Of course not!
People are going to Lose. Their. Minds! when they see the movie, and you might very well lose your mind, too.
I got to thinking about this today, remembering what it was like to be at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in April when the 2nd trailer debuted. Listen to the podcast for a piece of the audio feed from the room, the part right before Han says, “Chewie” while the screen is pitch black, and then the way the crowd goes absolutely nuts when they appear on screen. You can’t hear the “We’re home” over the screaming. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think you we’re listening to Shea Stadium in 1964 for the Beatles concert, or (a darker way of looking at it) a full-blown zombie apocalypse in Times Square at New Year’s.
We’re all gonna lose our minds when various combinations of Original Trilogy characters join each other onscreen for the first time. Han and Luke. Leia and Han. Leia and Luke. Chewie and Han. Threepio and Artoo. Luke and Artoo. And of course, Luke, Leia, and Han all together.
Because of this, I have the strange sensation that they (Abrams and Kasdan) can’t make all these reunions happen in a short span of time in the movie. I think they’re going to have to be separated and drawn out, one after another, in a series of reunions.
Now, I’ve read rumors, and spoilers, and none of the above are formed by that reading, so don’t worry about thinking that I’m giving something away. This is just how, if I were to put myself in the shoes of Abrams and Kasdan, I imagine the reunions would work best – one at a time, each for the full effect, until we get the triumvirate together once and for all.
And hopefully, that won’t take much longer than through the end of Act 2. I’d like to see them spend some time together, rather than just rushing into an ending. What do you think? How will these onscreen meetings go down? Have your say in the comments!
