It’s official: Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been given a PG-13 rating for “sci-fi action violence” by the mysterious MPAA. (For a glimpse into their inner workings, check out the documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated.
I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that the action violence in The Force Awakens will not get up to the level that Revenge of the Sith did with the fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan. As the Hollywood Reporter notes, the PG-13 rating didn’t exist when the Original Trilogy was created, but A) even now, there’s no way any of those would get a PG-13 in hindsight, and B) The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones both got straight-up PG ratings despite quite a lot of sci-fi action violence. I guess if you’re killing robots, it’s different.
