Today, it’s time for the deeper dive into Rey’s portion of Before the Awakening, the collection of stories by Greg Rucka that all take place before Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
There *may* be something really big in the story, depending on how you read it. When Rey first takes the repaired freighter up for a test flight, one of the other scavengers gets very nervous about the flight. Rey asks if it’s his first time (it is), and she replies, “Mine, too.”
WAIT A MINUTE!
If, by that, she means that she’s never flown a real ship before (since all she’s done before then is flown simulators), then it’s not a big deal.
If, however, she means that she’s never been on a ship that flies before, that opens up a whole new avenue of discussion about Rey. Previously, most if not all of us have been operating on the assumption that Rey was brought to Jakku from elsewhere and left there. But what about the possibility that Rey was born on Jakku, and left behind when she was five???
What do you think? Born there, or brought there? Share your opinion in the comments!
We also learn in the story that she built her own speeder and has had it “for years” (kind of young Anakin-like, yes?); built her own computer; can fly anything on a simulator from planet-bound repulsorlift craft to fighters and lighter freighters, under even the most difficult crisis conditions; can free climb confidently (not just with ropes like we saw her with in The Force Awakens); and that it took her, with the help of Devi and Strunk, the better part of a year to restore the freighter to working condition.
