Holy redaction, Maz Kanata! J.J. Abrams was at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend, and during the Q&A session, someone asked J.J. who Rey’s parents are. Emily Chi had the presence of mind to record his answer:
J.J. Abrams reveals Rey's parents aren't in The Force Awakens @slashfilm pic.twitter.com/O2j8gFNqtF

I think the most shocking thing about this video is that there wasn’t an uproar in the audience over that comment! Maybe people there were, in fact, in shock, since the implication of that comment is that Rey is NOT related to Leia or Luke in any way.
But Entertainment Weekly followed up on that pretty quickly, no doubt realizing the import of those remarks, and J.J. walked it back with a clarifying comment:
What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world.
Okay, so now you get to decide what kind of mistake J.J. actually made on stage. Did he blow it and reveal something about Rey’s parentage? Or did he simply misspeak? Would love to hear your thoughts on that in the comments!
Meanwhile, we’ve got more of Daisy Ridley’s MTV Movie Awards interview, where she addresses the Rey’s parents question (she knows the answer!), and Lupita Nyong’o reveals her Episode VIII status on Live With Kelly and Michael.
