Thanks so much to Cass Sunstein, author of the upcoming The World According to Star Wars, for taking time out of his busy schedule to join us for an interview about the book, its big ideas, and its insights into the Star Wars universe.
The interview was only scheduled for a half hour, but once we got rolling, there was no stopping the train! So we’ve divided up the interview into two parts, with the first one here, and the second half to be released tomorrow.
Because Cass is a constitutional law professor, we didn’t shy away from tackling some of the headier topics in his book during the interview … but we also took a lot of detours to talk about the movies and things you’d expect to hear Star Wars fans talking about as well. It kicks off with a conversation about his son Declan and the things they’ve been talking about that are Star Wars related, and goes off into a wild ride about:
–Mothers in Star Wars (as well as fathers and sons)
–Martin Luther King, Jr.
–The visionary genius of Lucas and the conservative rebellion of J.J. Abrams and Larry Kasdan
–Mass media and its lack of presence in the movies
–Freedom of choice versus destiny, not just in the movies but also how it may have affect the Star Wars fans’ experience of the movies
–And the proverbial “lots more.”
Have a listen, and please share your thoughts about the discussion in the comments!
