So the latest theory about who Rey’s parents are is that she and Poe Dameron are brother and sister. Which means she got her Force powers from the magic tree that Luke Skywalker gave to Poe’s mother, Shara Bey, in the Shattered Empire comic book mini-series. Never mind that Shara died years before Rey was born. Stepsister, maybe? That’s kind of pushing it.
When you consider that Kathleen Kennedy has made it clear that the Episode movies, aka the saga movies, are about the Skywalker family, the answers get narrowed down way more that the options collected in this i09 article. In fact, it can only follow one of four general avenues:
1. Luke’s the dad. Whether by marriage or fling, whether he knew about her or didn’t.
2. Leia’s the mom. Whether with Han or another man if she and Han had been taking any kind of “break” in their relationship at the right time.
3. Luke or Leia was cloned. Please, no.
4. What about Shmi Skywalker? From the old Expanded Universe, all we knew about her was that she and her family were captured by pirates and sold into slavery when she was six years old. We don’t know anything else about her family, especially now that even this little bit of info has become the stuff of “Legends.”
So – could Shmi have had brothers or sisters that kept the Skywalker line going? And maybe what Luke disappeared to look for wasn’t just the first Jedi temple – maybe he was looking for records of the rest of the Skywalker family. Something like this would better meet the test of being “deeply and profoundly satisfying,” as Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow is promising, than most of the other theories running around out there.
So, what do you think? Which theory has your vote at this point? Share your thoughts in the comments!
