So let’s start with links to the two articles that have the major new “sources” spouting off about the Rogue One reshoots:
‘Rogue One’: Re-Shoots But No Test Screening; Release Date Not Impacted
Disney Orders Reshoots for ‘Star Wars’ Stand-Alone ‘Rogue One’ This Summer
Now, here’s the good news, from The Hollywood Reporter:
The pic has not yet been tested before audiences, but one source describes the cut as having the feel of a war movie.
First of all, it’s waaaaaayy too early to be testing it in front of audiences, to say nothing of the whole secrecy thing, so no biggie. But as for having the feel of a war movie? Dude, that’s the feel it was supposed to have! This quote tells me Gareth Edwards did exactly the job he was brought in to do, and it gives me much more confidence in Rogue One despite all this reshoot talk.
But then the “sources” had to go and spoil it with this:
‘This is the closest thing to a prequel ever,’ a source tells THR. ‘This takes place just before A New Hope and leads up to the 10 minutes before that classic film begins. You have to match the tone!’… Sources say that while Edwards’ first cut was a solid showing, it didn’t measure up to the bar set in terms of four-quadrant appeal.
So okay, three things. One, no, you don’t have to match the tone. And two, if you’re trying to do this as a four-quadrant movie (appealing to both men and women, and ages both over and under 25), you’re approaching the movie wrong. Which leads to three, that executives are backing off what they asked for, and may be about to create a too-many-cooks-in-the-kitchen scenario which could ruin the movie.
Maybe Rogue One isn’t the movie Lucasfilm should be releasing in the afterglow of The Force Awakens. But it is, and they’re going to have to deal with the consequences. I just hope that they’re able to accomplish the stated goal the reshoots: “to lighten the mood, bring some levity into the story and restore a sense of fun to the adventure,” without watering the thing down to far.
What do you think about the reshoots? Have your say in the comments!
