In my last look at Force-Awakens-related information from Star Wars: Complete Locations, Starkiller Base is under the microscope. Now, this article seems to state definitively that Starkiller Base is NOT Ilum, the planet where the Jedi went to get kyber crystals for their lightsabers back in the day:
Cut across Wild Space and into the Unknown Regions, and eventually you will find Starkiller Base, which was situated not far from the legendary world of Ilum. Barren and isolated, this ice planet was protected by perhaps the greatest planetary shield ever created. The original identity of the planet was unknown, although it must be said that the Unknown Regions are named so for a reason.
However, everything else you hear about Starkiller Base seems to suggest that it is, in fact, Ilum. And Complete Locations seems to reinforce the idea indirectly:
Starkiller Base was once a remote and mysterious world known only to a handful in the galaxy. During the time of the Empire it had been used as a source of kyber crystals for use in the Death Stars’ superlasers. Before fleeing into the Unknown Regions, the founders of the First Order secured research logs from the secret Imperial labs that had tested these experimental weapons.
That sounds like a very reasonable likeness of Ilum, don’t you think? The StarWars.com Databank entry doesn’t clarify matters, as it turns out. Check out the description of Ilum and its history from Legends via Wookieepedia, and then have your say in the comments: Do you think Starkiller really is Ilum after all, or do you take the “situated not far from the legendary world of Ilum” langauge as gospel that it’s not Ilum itself?
