In part two of my two-part dive into The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher, I’m looking at the (precious little) information she shares about what it was like filming on the set of Star Wars.
I think this suffers most for the weight of expectation. When the PR materials tell you you’re going to learn what was going on behind the scenes and on the sets, you think you’re going to hear stories about Peter Cushing, Alec Guinness, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, George Lucas, on and on and on. Sadly, it turns out not to be the case at all.
What’s left are her ruminations on the life of a celebrity – and Carrie’s kind of celebrity goes far beyond what most Kardashian-style mortals consider “celebrity.” It’s still laugh-out-loud funny, and even though it’s somewhat stream-of-consciousness at times, and not always clear what the through line is intended to be, it was still well worth the read.
