Here’s your obligatory spoiler warning for the podcast: If you haven’t seen Rogue One and don’t want it spoiled, save this podcast for a later date.
Here’s what I’m getting into today. Darth Vader is #3 on the list of the 50 greatest villains of the first 100 years of American cinema, according to the American Film Institute. Personally, I think there’s a case to be made that he hasn’t really earned that position the same way that Hannibal Lecter earned his #1 spot. Sure, they both have style to burn, but Vader only choked a few people and shot down a few pilots in the middle of a war. Lecter, on the other hand, was a brutal and bloody killer for no good reason (sure, war isn’t a good reason either, but I think you get my drift).
I’m saying there’s a sound and logical case to be made that he may not deserve the high billing on the list that he gets, although I personally want Vader in that top spot. In the face of that logical case, does his Rogue One appearance change that assessment, and if so, for better or worse?
