We ran into a friend of ours at the movie theater, one who knows I do a Star Wars podcast, but Star Wars isn’t her “thing,” per se. And as we were talking after the movie in the lobby, I got distracted because one of the monitors was showing the most recent trailer for The Force Awakens. So I told my wife and our friend not to mind me, I was distracted. Which I have a bit of a free pass on, when it comes to Star Wars.
And our friend said, “Oh, is there another movie coming out?”
And we all had a good laugh over that one, because it’s what I’ve been talking a lot about on the podcast for nearly a year! But it occurred to me that we, the relative superfans of Star Wars, are living in a bubble. It seems like the whole world is talking about Star Wars when we go online, but the reality of how many people are actually aware of Star Wars right now may be totally different.
It may be that, like Jurassic World (which is now setting box office records), that comparatively speaking, very few people will even be aware or care about The Force Awakens until about two weeks before it comes out, and that it’ll still set box office records all the same.
What do you think? Do you think there are tens or hundreds of millions of people thinking about The Force Awakens right now? Have your say in the comments!

I get 90% of my Force Awakens news/spoilers/insights from Facebook fan groups for Star Wars. It seems the most extreme fans are on them, and they find articles/info from the far corners of the Internet and post them on the Facebook page

Thanks, Alex! That makes perfect sense – I think I may need to check out a few of them. Ever hear anything about reddit as a source, by chance?

My news comes from the Google Alert I have set up for “Star Wars” and a few other key phrases, JesiNews.co.UK, and stuff that pops up on Facebook.
As for the TFA bubble, true story, the week after the first trailer came out, a co worker stopped by my office and said “Hey you like Star Wars right? Did you see the new movie this weekend?” when I asked if he was talking about the trailer, he said “No no, the movie’s out now! I saw it on the news. Did you go see it?” I had to pull up starwars.com on my computer to show him that no, the movie was not out yet, but that we still had months to go. – I think I found the interaction funnier than he did. 🙂

Must have been a bit embarrassing for him. But at least he was kind enough to share some news he thought would be exciting to you! 🙂
