There’s a character important enough to the Star Wars universe that he was brought out of animation and into a silver screen debut in Rogue One. It’s Saw Gerrera, played by Forest Whitaker in the upcoming movie. At left is how he appeared Clone Wars season 5 (pic via the StarWars.com Databank), and at right is a production still from the set of Rogue One (via Entertainment Weekly).
As Leland Chee of the Lucasfilm Story Group has pointed out, this is not the first time an animated Star Wars character has made the jump to movies. Boba Fett did it infamously in the Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978. So did General Grievous, thanks to that first Clone Wars (non-canon) cartoon series that came out before Revenge of the Sith.
According to the article, Gerrera is extreme – to the point that the good guys aren’t sure he’s really a good guy, or entirely on their side. He’s apparently got a strong stomach for doing brutal things in the name of a higher cause. And he represents one faction of a diverse Rebellion, which is coming together to face one common and gigantic enemy in the Death Star. In fact, maybe this is where the phrase “Rebel ALLIANCE” comes from, right?
Meanwhile, what do you think? Are you excited by the possibility of seeing multiple Rebel factions coming together in Rogue One? Or do you just want to see the all-star team pull off their heist? Have your say in the comments!
