It’s Star Wars Year by Year: A Visual History (Updated and Expanded Edition), and the folks at DK Publishing were exceedingly generous in sending me a copy to review prior to its release. (Which is happening today!)
Over the next three days, I’m going to share tidbits from the book with you on the podcast. Honestly, three days is not nearly enough to share with you as much as I would love to share, because the book is ridiculously chock-filled with fantastic photos and images, great historical content breezily presented, and ultimately depicts a compelling picture of the world of Star Wars as well as the world outside of Star Wars, and how the two intertwined.
In today’s episode, I’m covering the first two sections of the book: “Life Before Star Wars” (1914-1972) and “The Original Trilogy” (1973-1983). Both of those sections were written by Ryder Windham, and I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure of checking out any of Ryder’s writing before. But I thoroughly enjoyed it, and his depiction of the world in which George Lucas grew up was remarkable and very telling in its way. After the fact, you can see how things came together for Lucas in that magical way that things do from time to time, thanks to Ryder’s work in that section.
“The Original Trilogy” section is going to be a mind-blowing nostalgia trip for thousands of Star Wars fans. So many things in there took me right back to childhood, things I didn’t even know I still had stored in my brain until I saw some of the pictures in there and had long-forgotten memories bursting forth in rapid succession.
I know this is an expensive book, and again, I’m tremendously grateful to DK Publishing for gifting me with a copy. If you can’t get this for yourself, get to your local library and tell them to add it to their collection post haste. And put it on your holiday wish list – it’s well worth the investment!
