Not only did Original Trilogy fans have the toys, they didn’t have much else to distract their attention! Their imaginations were fired, and they had something tangible. Today, the tangible toys aren’t as popular, and heck, you see as much of the Original Trilogy toys as prequel or cartoon toys on the shelves, suggesting that the toy market is still pitched to the OT die-hards. The next generation of fans engages via digital media, and if it gets boring, they just move on.
But the point of mentioning all this is, since OT fans were the spark, and most of what they had were the toys (yes, there were the storybooks and t-shirts and all that other stuff), that toys could easily be a key driver in sustaining interest in Star Wars up until the Expanded Universe came along.
