Force Feature: Star Wars: Episode VII Weekly Update
Exploring the many worlds of Star Wars, in the imagination and in real life!So it’s been a comparatively quiet week in the rumor mill, primarily because there hadn’t been any filming going on! It was a previously planned break in the production schedule, and not affected by Harrison Ford’s leg injury.
Which brings up two things. First of all, have you happened to go to the blog at StarWars.com to look at Episode 7 news? There’s so little there, it’s driving me a bit crazy. The last update was July 6th, nearly two months ago, and before that, it was June 2nd, and then April 29th, which was when they posted the black and white table read photo. No wonder the rumor mill has been working overtime! Of course, it’s hard to say whether the rumors have been true or been bits of misinformation sown to keep us all guessing.
And speaking of guessing, just what exactly did happen to Harrison Ford on set? The thing that keeps getting reported these days is that he broke his leg, but have you ever heard of a 70+ year old healing that fast from a broken leg? I’m kinda not buying it. A bum ankle, sure, I’ll take the odds on that one. It’s clear that some piece of the Millennium Falcon set fell on him, and beyond that, well, it looks like we’ll have to wait until the premiere before we get the real story. Because he looks spry and dandy now, and I can’t see how that’s possible.
In fact, silence seems to be a quality the rest of the actors have adopted very well. Cast members Adam Driver and Gwendoline Christie were at the Venice Film Festival this past week, and neither spilled anything about the movie. Driver admitted that walking on the set for the first time was “surreal,” and Christie joked that there were snipers trained on them to ensure secrets were kept.
So filming has resumed again, much to all our collective relief, since the release date is still set to 12/18/15, a mere 472 days from now!
As for the filming that’s already done, here’s a fascinating tidbit. Five of the six existing movies visited Tattooine, and it was mentioned out loud in the sixth. People suspected that with filming in Abu Dhabi, political tensions in Tunisia, and then the Omaze video in the desert setting, that Tattooine would make another appearance. But according to the rumor mill, the movie won’t be returning to Tattooine. Which begs the question, what are they filming, and for where? No answers as of yet.
Villain speculation continues to abound, even going so far as to suggest the potential return of a popular enemy from the Original Trilogy. There’s a link at the blog post for this episode right here, so we don’t have to spoil it for you. All we’ll say is, if the Expanded Universe is to be believed anymore, then yes, there’s a possibility it could happen. Though the actor who portrayed him before has been on record, numerous times, saying that he wasn’t asked and doesn’t expect to do it.
Two last bits of news for you. Director Kevin Smith of Clerks fame got to visit the set of Episode VII a while back, and shared the experience in as much detail as his NDA would allow. Now comes the speculation that Smith actually may have been filming a role in the movie!
And do you remember hearing about new stormtrooper helmets a couple weeks back? Well, somebody extracted the GPS data out of the photo of the helmets that had been leaked, and guess what? The GPS location where the photo was taken was, drum roll please…Pinewood Studios, where they’re filming right now. Pretty cool, eh? That’s about as much of a confirmation of anything we’ll get.
