Force Feature: The 7 Best Moments of Star Wars
Exploring the many worlds of Star Wars, in the imagination and in real life!Like we did the other day with the 7 Best Star Wars quotes, any list of moments in Star Wars is up for intense debate. I did a Google search on the subject, and discovered bunches of lists devoted to moments and scenes in the movies. How great is it that we all like a set of movies that has so much awesomeness worth discussing!
So let’s get the discussion started! I’m going to drop in my seven favorite moments here, and I’d love to hear what yours are. Join the conversation at Facebook.com/sw7x7 to share, and share why you love those moments, too.
7. “Obi-Wan never told you…” The thing is, any list HAS to include this. It’s a non-negotiable. But I’m kicking this off with it the #7 spot because, over time, there are moments I’ve come to appreciate even more. Not that I don’t dig this scene, I mean, you don’t need me to tell you how incredible it is. But it is…and by the way, how does Vader know that Obi-Wan never told Luke the big secret? Is it just because when Luke showed up in Cloud City, the first thing out of his mouth wasn’t, “I can’t believe you’re my dad!”?
6. Qui-Gon’s death. Apparently I suspended my disbelief in the theater so much that I didn’t see it coming. Yes, there’s that little moment where Qui-Gon stops and gets that funny kind of look on his face, right before Darth Maul gets him. Which made me think, on subsequent viewings, that Qui-Gon saw it coming a moment before it happened. Which is crazy, right? But I especially like how it mirrors Luke losing Obi-Wan in Star Wars, and the student now has to step up and take on the mantle of the mentor.
5. Han’s carbonite farewell. So I never would have taken Harrison Ford for an improvisational actor, but considering his comedic skills, maybe we should give him a little more credit in that regard. So, he famously ad libbed the “I know” line, but do you know what the line could have been? Leia says, “I love you,” and Han replies, “Just remember that Leia, because I’ll be back.” Four years before the Terminator would say it so famously! Do you think we’d be saying James Cameron and Schwarzenegger ripped it off from Lucas had the line stayed in? Anyway, it’s not a bad line, it’s just…not “I know.”
4. The moment of truth. “I have the high ground,” Obi-Wan tells Anakin in Revenge of the Sith, and Anakin, in his full arrogance, tries to get the higher ground with a Jedi jump. Now, I knew going into the movie that Darth Vader needed the suit to survive, but I didn’t know that it was because Obi-Wan cut off both his legs and his other arm. I think I exclaimed aloud in the theater when it happened. I still kind of can’t believe Obi-Wan took it to that brutal of a conclusion.
3. “Yeeehooo!” Movies are supposed to give you moments where all hope seems lost at the climax, and then turn it around for you. But I didn’t know that in 1977. So seeing the Millennium Falcon flying out of the sun to the rescue during the Death Star attack is one of the most awesome moments for me, still hard-wired into my brain. I never saw it coming, and even now when I watch it, I still almost can’t see it coming.
2. “Not from a Jedi.” Palpatine seals the deal with Anakin right there. The whole scene is absolutely brilliant, and that last line, with the sidelong look, is just picture-perfect. And thank goodness they brought Ian McDiarmid back for the prequels. He once said he thought they’d ask someone younger to do it, but heck, Lucas has been known not to make mistakes, from time to time.
1. The salute and the sliding door. When Luke is standing on the edge of the plank over the Sarlacc Pit, you get sort of an Ocean’s 11-style series of looks from the major players – Luke, Lando, and Leia, and a confused Han that’s very funny when you think about it for an extra second. But still, you’re wondering just how in Force Ghost Obi-Wan’s name are they going to get out of this? Then Luke gives that jaunty little salute to R2, and the little compartment door on the top of his head opens up. Now, I don’t know about you, but they only show a little bit of what’s in there, yet when I saw it, I knew it was a lightsaber. And I still get an incredible rush of joy at the launching of it and the blast of the triumphant Star Wars theme that accompanies the turn of the tide, probably the biggest rush of all of them.
