Star Wars Aftermath tells the first in a series of tales of what happens to the galaxy after the events of Return of the Jedi. Unfortunately, I found it disappointing. More unfortunately so, I thought I might be partly to blame.
I came to it with the expectation that our classic Original Trilogy heroes were going to be a major part of the book. I didn’t get what I wanted. And before I proceed further, I should point out:
-
No trash on the beach! 🙂 (Where you might be lucky enough to read the book)
-
Also – potential Aftermath spoilers ahead, proceed at your own risk.
Look, Luke is only mentioned by name, doesn’t appear. Leia appears in a holovid and, in a flashback to the Battle of Endor, Leia’s in the scope attached to the long barrel of a bounty hunter. Han and Chewie appear briefly in one of the story’s Interludes. Other than that, very little OT stuff on which to remark.
The supporting cast is there: Admiral Ackbar, General Madine, Mon Mothma, Wedge Antilles, for example. And Rae Sloane from the first new new-Expanded Universe novel, A New Dawn. (That’s a lot of “new” there.) Beyond that, we have to get to know, love, and trust a new set of characters, whose lives take a considerably long time to intertwine before we get to the action.
And ah, there’s the rub. Because I’d been expecting to see our favorite characters, because that’s also what we got with the very first novels of the old-Expanded Universe, I was setting the book up to utterly fall short in the expectations game.
We’ll talk more about it in the coming days, but what did YOU think of the novel? Have your say in the comments!
