Seeing the movie a second time made all the difference in the world. Though I liked The Force Awakens the first time, I was also so deep in my head over it that I made it difficult to unabashedly like the thing. I was analyzing it, comparing scenes and dialogue I’d heard in trailers and teasers online to what I was seeing in the theater.
This time, though, since I’d had all the heavy mental lifting out of the way, I got to enjoy The Force Awakens much lighter of heart and duty. And I enjoyed the heck out of it. The humor, the warmth, the naturalness, and the dogfights, especially the dogfights – that’s some of my favorite stuff in general.
I’ll also say that the variations on the things with which we’re all familiar are well done, too. Han’s famous “Luke! We’re gonna have company!” has two related versions show up in The Force Awakens, and before I proceed, both were available before the movie release – one in a Disney Channel “On the Set” piece, and one in a commercial. It’s Poe saying at one point, “We got company” in a quiet close-up, and at another point, during a dogfight over Skykiller Base, shouting “We got a lot of company!” I like those reads much better than I would have liked, say, the same straight line reading from script to script.
