The showdown we’ve been waiting for has finally happened! Maul v. Kenobi V (read a summary of I-IV here) takes place in “Twin Suns,” episode 20 of season 3 of Star Wars Rebels. (Here’s the full episode rundown on Wookieepedia, from where the image also comes.)
SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t seen the episode and don’t want it spoiled for you, then save this podcast and blog post for a later date. Otherwise, if you’re ready to get into the details with me, then let’s go.
For the record – and it’s timestamped and everything, three days before the episode debuted – this is what I wrote in the Star Wars Podcast Alliance Group about the outcome of Kenobi and Maul facing off in “Twin Suns”:
Personally, I don’t see how Maul survives this. If word gets out that Kenobi lives, Luke is in danger. I think Obi will know Maul has to die. There’s no way he can trust Maul to keep his mouth shut.
And I know some folks are lucky enough to get screeners in advance, but I’m not one of them. So yes, I’m patting myself on the back about making a correct prediction on this one. I’m sure I’m not the only one who made that prediction, but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes.
I’m going to be unpacking this episode all week long, because despite the sparseness to it, there’s a WHOLE lot to discuss. In today’s episode, we’re going over the highlights, taking note of the bond between Kenobi and Maul that reveals itself at the end of the episode, and a few interesting parallels between the events of this episode and some familiar scenes from the Original Trilogy.
