We’ve talked about three of the characters from Rogue One – Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, and Saw Gerrera – and the new things we learned about them from the recently released trailers.
Well, there are quite a few other characters involved in the movie, about whom we learned a little less. Today and tomorrow, we’re going to run down those characters for you, and bring you up to date. In today’s podcast, we’re covering Galen Erso, Darth Vader, Baze Malbus, K-2SO, and Alister Petrie’s as-yet-unnamed Rebel officer. Here’s what we know:
Galen Erso: The only new thing we learned was that he was the one who sent the transmission about the imminent Imperial weapons test. Unfortunately, this is just a tantalizing detail – we don’t know if he’s with the Empire by choice or force (or not at all!), or whether the transmission was an official one or something embedded inside something else, like a Holonet news broadcast (as we’ve seen done in Star Wars Rebels).
Darth Vader: The one shot we get of him has him looking at a display screen showing the Death Star, and it looks to be the kind of display that we’ve seen on the Death Star itself. In a recent episode, I shared our theory of what Vader might be doing with the Death Star – let me know what you think of it!
Baze Malbus: In the trailer, Jiang Wen says, “I fight the Empire now.” Which we pretty much knew. But the “They destroyed our home!” line is a new bit of business. Hard to know exactly what he means – his actual house, or a community, or even a planet (not likely, perhaps, unless the Death Star comes online that quickly in the movie). But so far, we only knew that he was traveling with Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe character, taking care of his blind friend. Now we know that Baze has some motivation of his own in this fight.
Alister Petrie’s unnamed Rebel officer: Basically, we now know he’s sarcastic and doesn’t trust Jyn as far as he can throw her. Not much more. A man of mystery, this one.
K-2SO: We now know he has a bit of Threepio in him, thanks to his “97.6 percent chance of failure” line. We also got to see what the “uncomfortable honesty” looks like when he tells Jyn he won’t kill her. He could have phrased that as, “The captain says you are a friend. I will protect you.” But the choice to phrase it as “I will not kill you” shows that his brain is wired in an unusual way.
How about you? Did you learn anything else about these five characters from the new trailers? Share your thoughts in the comments!
