Forest Whitaker’s character in Rogue One, Saw Gerrera, is a bit controversial – he’s described as an “extremist” as far as the spectrum of rebellion goes. He had a couple of brief shots and an intense bit of dialogue in the first trailer, but what’s new that we know about him thanks to the new trailers? Glad you asked!
1. Hair! As you can see in the picture above/right, Saw has hair and a beard in the new trailer. Why, you might ask? I did too, since there’s only so much Star Wars media one man can consume. So I posted the photo comparison in a few places, and heard from Bryan Young at Full of Sith that Whitaker has said in an interview that the shots are from two different parts of the film.
In case you thought this was due to the whole messy reshoot thing, seems that’s not the case. And as one other commentor suggested, the shaving may be a sign that he’s about to jump hard-core into the fight to steal the Death Star plans.
2. He’s being recruited for the mission. Up till now, we’d only seen him in those couple shots mentioned above. But we had no idea what he was doing there – in fact, because of his dialogue, he seemed to be delivering a cautionary tale about fighting a rebellion, not participating in one. But thanks to the exchange we see between him and Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso (“This is our chance to make a difference”), it seems clear that the rebels are trying to enlist Saw in their mission. This, despite the fact that we haven’t seen him (yet) in any battle scenes.
3. He’s not in the best condition. As opposed to the fiery Saw we saw in the first trailer, this is a much wearier, older, grayer Saw. And within a day of the new trailer debuting, the StarWars.com databank entry on Saw changed from this to this, highlighting the fact of his “ailing health.”
And that’s what I’ve got for the new things we know about Saw Gerrera thanks to the new Rogue One footage. Do you have any other things to add? Share them in the comments!
