As opposed to the other characters Ive explored so far in this series, it’s a little harder to get at what Poe Dameron’s “biggest challenge” could be in The Last Jedi.
I think a big reason for that is that we don’t know much about his personal background, and so we don’t know as much about his emotional stakes. His father was a Rebel Pathfinder and his mother was a Rebel pilot. Mom died when he was young, Dad was still alive at least as of Poe being nine years old. He grew up around one of the Force trees that Luke Skywalker liberated from an Imperial laboratory. He flew for the New Republic Navy, but believed the First Order was more of a threat than anyone wanted to admit, which is how he ended up getting recruited for the Resistance by General Leia Organa herself.
Beyond that, we know little about him – what makes him tick, where his weak spots are, et cetera. But I’ve got a few ideas as to what Lucasfilm and company could be doing with him in The Last Jedi, which I’m sharing in today’s podcast.
