Remember what it was like, when you were a kid, and you stayed up to watch your local news program because they promised some exclusive about The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi? I particularly remember them with Jedi, and what I remember with it was that the newscast would run from 11:00pm to 11:30pm, and the Jedi piece would be on from 11:29:00 to 11:29:30.
Well, that’s essentially what happened tonight during the American Music Awards. It started at 8pm, and after relentlessly promoting a new scene to be shown exclusively at the AMAs, it wasn’t until about 10:30pm, 2.5 hours later, that Jennifer Lopez introduced this:
A scene that was not entirely new, not even more than halfway new, and which ran for exactly 17 seconds. We got maybe five seconds of new footage, but on a positive note, we got the dialogue from the scene.
So yes, Disney is doing their best to take advantage of every platform they can get to promote The Force Awakens. And maybe there’s a specific consumer psychology about doing things this way, that especially works somehow. But I can’t say as I enjoy it. And now that I’m reminded that I can see these things on YouTube within seconds of their airing, I think I may just skip the build-up all together and save myself the frustration and the having to listen to Nicki Minaj for a heartbeat more than I have to. ๐
That said, the Pentatonix a capella renditions of Star Wars music, accompanied by a full symphony orchestra, were pretty cool. And here’s that video for you, too.
So, what did you think about the AMA scene? Psyched? Or were you bugged by the sound and fury of the buildup, when you saw what it amounted to? Have your say in the comments!
