The end is near … the theatrical run for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has completed its seventh weekend, and even though it’s still playing on more than 2,500 screens and will supposedly split time on IMAX screens instead of being given the boot by now, its money-making heydey is all but over.
According to the prognosticators, it should slowly crawl to the $2 billion mark in the next 7-10 days, but will likely not de-throne Avatar worldwide, and may not top Titanic for that matter. (What is it about those two movies?!)
But the more important thing for fans now is … now what? We’re in a kind of valley, where we’ve gleaned about all there is to glean about The Force Awakens, and yet we have so little to go on in terms of big news from other productions (Rogue One, Episode VIII).
I read a rumor somewhere that Lucasfilm might consider tacking the first Rogue One teaser onto The Force Awakens late in its run, to help revive a last bit of box office spirit. Would that it were true, but it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen so far. Everyone’s still talking about it debuting with Captain America: Civil War, which seems silly, considering that none of the three trailers for The Force Awakens we’re tied to ANY movie release the way we all like to talk about how The Phantom Menace was tied to Meet Joe Black. We’re living in a different world.
But there were supposedly “clues” about The Force Awakens in other places – books released on Force Friday, that might now shed some new light on things. And we’ll be exploring those as time goes by, too.
But for now – how are YOU feeling, now that the movie is entering its final run? Are you bummed, bored, ready to move on, trying to fit in as many last big-screen viewings as possible? Share your thoughts in the comments!
