By now you’ve heard the big news about the Academy Awards last night. No, I’m not talking about the La La Land/Moonlight mixup – I’m talking about the Rogue One shutout.
It’s now been 36 years since a Star Wars movie won an Oscar – namely, The Empire Strikes Back for Best Sound. Return of the Jedi got four nods and no wins. The Prequel Trilogy received a total of five nominations, with no wins. The Force Awakens tied the whole PT with five nods, but did just as poorly in the wins column.
But…
But…
Does it matter?
The Force Awakens and Rogue One did just fine at the box office and in the hearts of the lion’s share of Star Wars fandom. On the other hand, I’d wager that the nominations are as much about the story and performances in the movie as they are about the particular categories. So it kind of does matter (to me, at least), in a way. I want to see these new Star Wars movies validated, and I think our best and brightest hope for an Oscar to break the streak comes with Rian Johnson, John Williams, and The Last Jedi.
How about you? When do you think a Star Wars movie will get its next Oscar, and for what will it be? Share your thoughts in the comments!
