Here’s the official scoop, as far as its known:
From The Hollywood Reporter:
“Gary has been a wonderful, inspired contributor and I enjoyed working with him tremendously,” said Edwards in a statement. “I’m so grateful for all of his contributions.”
Said Whitta, “The year I spent working with Lucasfilm on this Star Wars film has been by far the most rewarding period of my entire career. As a lifelong Star Wars fan I’m deeply grateful to have had the rare opportunity to contribute to a new chapter in its ongoing cinematic legacy. The film is going to be amazing.”
Whitta and Edwards have been working on the Star Wars project since around May 2014.
Star Wars Fun Fact
Surprising or little known Star Wars tidbits, sometimes related to today’s Force Feature. From the hacked Sony emails related to The Interview crisis: A missive from Michael De Luca, President of Production for Columbia Pictures, to Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, on 9/20/14 (grammar/punctuation errors left intact):
Star Wars: Any studio would have lost josh trank and rian Johnson to this, it’s freaking Star Wars. Your After Earth writer Gary Whitta is writing Gareth Edwards stand alone Star Wars film. Simon Kinberg is writing Josh Tranks. No one knows what they’re about but Boba Fett is rumored to be the subject of one. Rian Johnson as you know is doing the main ones, episodes 8 and 9 of the Luke and Leia story lines, after JJ. Not sure anything is gained by looking at what Lucasfilm is doing except we are stalking all these people too, except Whitta whom I think blows.
On an unrelated note, happy birthday to John Jackson Miller, author of Star Wars: A New Dawn! The first book in the new Expanded Universe/Star Wars Canon is good fun and delivers a terrific introduction to Kanan and Hera from Star Wars Rebels, and definitely got me excited for the cartoon series.
